Family Records Centre Civil registration of life events
was introduced in England and Wales in 1837. Indexes to the
certificates are held by the Family Records Centre. Microfiche
copies are also available at some local libraries and record
offices and at
Family History Centres of the Church of the Latter Day
Saints. Information about copies held locally can be found
at the
Familia web site, - UK and Irelands guide to genealogical
resources in Public Libraries. It is also worth trying the
FreeBMD website which is a searchable database of the
Birth, Death and Marriage indexes - this is a volunteer-run
project and the database is not yet complete. The
National Library of Wales is acknowledged as the principal
centre for researching Welsh genealogy and also has copies
of the ONS indexes for Wales and England.
