Records of migration are particularly important in many family
histories. For many people, tracing their family history will
lead them either to an ancestor who was born abroad but came
to live in the United Kingdom (immigrated) or who left the
United Kingdom to live abroad (emigrated). Many types of records
relating to people leaving England, Wales and the United Kingdom
are held by the
PRO (Public Records Office) in Kew (London).
Northern Ireland
For emigration records relating to people leaving Ireland
(Ulster), particularly for the USA, Canada and Australia,
many records are also held by the
Public Record Office of Northern Island.
Scotland
Some records relating to specific schemes of emigration from
Scotland in the nineteenth century can be found at the National
Archive of Scotland, however there are unfortunately very
few records in the
NAS which list names of emigrants.
